O. Giosti was a 19th-century painter of the Neapolitan landscape school, a tradition that favored the Gulf of Naples and the Tyrrhenian islands. The view is taken from the northern side of the island, likely from the Casamicciola or Lacco Ameno area, and encompasses the harbor with its pier, the flat coastline, and, in the left background, the smoking profile of Mount Vesuvius beyond the Gulf. In the foreground, along a paved path, figures in local costume (a shepherdess with goats and a rider on a donkey) lend the composition the character of Southern Romantic vedutism. The technique is fluid and luminous, with an atmospheric rendering of the sky and sea consistent with the Campanian vedutism of the late 19th century.
