Description

Pair of finely inlaid bedside tables from the Louis XVI period and style. Bologna, last quarter of the 17th century.
The cabinets are characterized by a refined geometric inlay, which extends across the entire surface of the furniture. The veneer, fixed on a solid poplar structure, is made of noble essences: walnut mounted in a herringbone pattern and cherry for the base; ebony, boxwood, walnut and mulberry (to replace the more exotic “bois de rose”) for the threads and inlays.
The feet, also veneered and inlaid and of a truncated pyramid shape, are demarcated from the body of the furniture by means of refined frames in cherry, walnut and boxwood.
The tops are made of Apuan cloudy marble, extracted from the quarries of Massa Carrara and built-in and are contemporary with the furnishings. This type of marble was highly appreciated by the Bolognese cabinet-makers of the time.
Provenance: Private collection of a Bolognese family.
