FULL DETAILS (link)

The proposed triptych, a work of excellent pictorial quality, depicts the Adoration of the Shepherds in the central panel, and can be attributed to a painter from the workshop of the Flemish Pieter Pourbus (Gouda 1523 – Bruges 1584); given the characteristics of the painting, it is a painting which can therefore be dated to around 1570.

It should be considered that the two side panels, which each bear the date "1621" at the bottom, however, were created and added in a later period than the central painting, presumably in conjunction with the construction of the tripartite structure, and on the occasion of its donation Opera.

The two female figures portrayed are the work of a Flemish author who was always active between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries but of unknown identity.

These would be portraits of the donors, kneeling in nuns' habits in front of a prayer bench with an open prayer book, with their hands clasped. On the sides of the two nuns, a white square represents the symbol of the five wounds of Christ, symbol of the order, under the date "1621".

In the background there is a mountainous landscape and a town under a grey-blue sky.

Focusing on the central panel, we are faced with a valuable depiction of the moment in which the shepherds reach the hut of the Nativity: the Virgin with Saint Joseph, next to kneeling winged angels, are portrayed as they proudly show the child to the group of shepherds who have arrived to adore him .

Also in this case, the attention paid to the background landscape is very particular, with an old ruin with a square tower in the centre.

Above, a group of playful angels participating in the event and holding up the scroll announcing the birth of the Savior.
