Benares, India - Indian Empire (1858-1947)
550x9,3 inch
The beautiful long-length fabric is woven on a loom and was produced in silk brocade woven with fine metal threads to create a singular two-chromatic effect with a green background highlighted by elegant golden open flowers, palmettes and geometric designs.
The trimmings come from Benares (today's Varanasi), formerly the most important and prestigious center for brocade weaving in India. Benares brocades were made by Muslim men considered true masters of the textile art.
The 5 and a half meter long trimmings were joined in a single point and are in excellent condition.
